Connor, you’re young (24 years old) and it’s your third year as pro cyclist. Your were with An post, you joined Baku cycling project last november, how do you feel in this team?
« Its a really nice team. A very professionally run continental team, with good staff and most important for me a good program of races. Its a fun team to be in. »
You had very good results this season (second in the An Post Ras, present on every step and a very good turn of Estonia), this is your best season?
« In terms of results, yeah it probably is. It started off well in langkawi, riding for rico rogers in the sprints. I picked up a few results in Oz, then got 2nd in tour of thailand. I got a second in azerbaijan and the mountains jersey, then 2nd in the Ras. Estonia was a nice result because it was a 2.1 for the sprinters and I still managed something. But, I still need to get some wins. But I’ll just keep doing what Im doing, working closely with the team and hopefully with a bit of luck it will pay off. I haven’t done a whole lot different in terms of preparation; I think its due to a different mental approach to racing. Obviously we have alot of very strong different styles of riders, and so you need to do what’s best for the team. But, The team have been great; giving me my chance, and so when I get it it’s all about taking it; not just settling for solid results. »
You prefer one-day races or those in stages?
« I like both, although I think I prefer a good stage race. It seems to suit me well enough. Saying that I’m happy to ride my bike, and as long as it’s a nice race Im more than happy. »
You will be at Kreiz Breizh in July. This will be your first time?
« Yeah it’ll be my first time in KB. I broke my pelvis two weeks ago and it will be my first race back.It was good timing as I was scheduled for a break after the irish champs anyway. I will do a training camp before hand and so should be ok.
I’ve been in brittany a few times and have ridden Mi-Aout twice. I was there the year mc nally won it. I definitely like the country. The style of racing is aggressive and there is also a selective parcours. The people have cycling in the head. It’s a good place to race.
I used to live in France in the VTT days, in the south with miguel martinez. So it’s always good to get back to france in general. I don’t get to go there that often anymore. I’m a bit of an all rounder. I can climb, TT, ride in the wind all reasonably well; without being a real specialist. I have the sprint of a 12 year old. »
What is your favorite race?
« Tough one, I really don’t know. Now its all about being a good professional, so any victory that can get me there is good. Then it’s all about staying in the pro rank, doing my job and seeing where that leads. I don’t really dream about what big races I’d like to win. »
Can you be selected with Ireland?
« I dont know about that. If we have 6 riders it’s a possibility. But realistically Nico and Dan are certain, then Deignan has been going real well. As has brammeier. I would really need to consolidate and do something more in the remaining few months of the year to be considered. »
