C’est le Français David Gaudu (Groupama FDJ) qui a remporté l’avant-dernière étape de la VueltaAu sommet de l’Alto de la Covatilla, il remporte en solitaire la 17me étape. Il devance Gino Mäder et Ion Izagirre troisième. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) a tout donner sur cette ultime ascension en attaquant Primoz Roglic. L’equatorien termine 8ème à 2min35 de Gaudu mais Primoz Roglic termine à 2min56 et conserve la place de leader de cette Vuelta pour 24 secondes.
