Vainqueur à plusieurs reprises l’année dernière avec le Club élite AC Bisontine, Philip Lavery a été stagiaire chez l’équipe professionnelle Cofidis, mais, n’ayant pas réussi à intégrer l’équipe française, il avait décidé de mettre un terme à sa carrière. David McQuaid, le manager de l’équipe Synergy Baku Cycling Project a réussi à lui faire changer d’avis et Lavery portera les couleurs de Baku cette année.
David, pourquoi avoir fait venir Philip Lavery ?
« On essaie toujours de chercher des jeunes talents tout le long de la saison, on en a testé plusieurs même si certains n’avaient que 21 ou 22 ans. Nous sommes constamment à la recherche de nouveaux talents et nous en avons trouvé un. Il y en aura peut-être un autre dans la première partie de saison encore.Le recrutement de Philip n’est pas un pari. OK, il est un peu a court de forme physique car après ce mauvais hiver, son moral n’était pas au mieux,mais la saison est longue et, dans quelques semaines, il sera prêt. «
Il y aura donc 3 Irlandais avec McConvey, Brammeier, et Lavery chez Baku…
«Oui, ca fait 3 coureurs Irlandais pour 2014, contre un seul en 2013. Je sais que je suis irlandais, mais c’est un hasard si nous avons 3 Irlandais. Connor a bien marché la saison dernière et donc il méritait notre confiance à nouveau. Pour Brammeier, il était libre et nous étions intéressé pour l’avoir comme capitaine de route. Peu importe sa nationalité, c’est un grand coureur. Nous sommes une équipe conti (3ème division) mais on agit comme une équipe conti-pro (2ème division) et on court les courses à travers l’Europe. Donc il était évident que Philip Lavery avait ce niveau, il a sa chance maintenant et à lui de montrer ce qu’il vaut maintenant.
En terme de cyclisme mondial, l’Irlande, comme l’Azerbaïdjan, est une nation minoritaire. Il est donc plus difficile pour nos jeunes de trouver une équipe par rapport aux Anglais, Australiens Américains, Français… Après l’arrêt de Will Walker, je tenais vraiment que cette place disponible soit pour quelqu’un de méritant, et, à 23 ans, Philip Lavery en était digne. Nous avons une excellente équipe d’encadrants avec des entraineurs spécifiques comme McCann qui travaille étroitement avec les coureurs pour améliorer leurs performances. Je suis persuadé que Philip sera fin prêt pour la fin du printemps ou le début de l’été. Ce printemps sera florissant pour Baku. »

The young Irishman Philip Lavery joined the continental team Synergy Baku Cycling Project. Winner of several races last year with the elite Club AC Bisontine, he had a stagiere with the pro team Cofidis. But had not succeeded in integrating the French team. He had therefore decided to put an end to his career. But the manager of the team Baku, David McQuaid has proposed a last minute contract , it would have been a pity if this young rider had not continued his racing career.
Why have you recruited Philip Lavery?
« All our squad are tried and tested riders, they have proven results, despite some being as young as 21 or 22. We are constantly looking out for new talent and have already identified one, possibly two riders in the early part of the season. Taking on Philip is not a gamble, yes OK he is short of fitness because his morale was down over the Winter but it is a long season, he will come right after a couple of weeks »
3 Irish riders with Synergy Baku team, Conor McConvey, Matt Brammeier and Philip Lavery
« Yes, 3 Irish riders in 2014, up from 1 in 2013. I know that I am Irish, but growing the number of Irish in the team from 1 to 3 has been purely by chance. We had Connor in 2013 and Connor did more than enough to merit a place in the 2014 squad. With Brammeier coming available, we were interested in having him as a Senior rider in the team, no matter what Nationality he was. We want to be racing at a Pro Continental level, even registered as Continental with the UCI. Adding Philip just made sense, he has his chance now, we will see what he chooses to do with that.
In terms of World Cycling, Ireland, like Azerbaijan is a minority Nation, and lucky breaks or opportunities are harder to come by say that those youngsters get being in the British, Australian or American systems, or just being Italian, French or Spanish. After Will Walker’s sudden retirement, I wanted to make that vacant place available for someone whom really deserved it, and at 23 years old I felt Philip was deserving of that vacant place. We have an excellent team of Directors, we have super back room staff and we now have McCann working more closely with the riders on specific performance areas, so I firmly believe that Philip, come the end of Spring, start of Summer will be flourishing in this Baku team »
